In keeping with our tradition, I voted for Zeta Fleet.
All our “expansion fleets” have followed the letters of the Greek alphabet, as far back as when even the very idea of ever needing a “Gamma Fleet” third expansion fleet seemed both absurd and arrogant to many of us.
It’s not lost on me that the 44th has never been about hard-core recruitment or Fleet expansion, and yet we have expanded beyond the point anyone here expected.
I guess the idea of an easy-going Fleet where the point is having fun, and playing in a way you personally find enjoyable, with no demands on members beyond: “Be friendly if you can: but at the very least, don’t be a dick”, plus the whole “no discussions of religion or politics in non-private chat” has resonated with a lot more people than we ever expected it would.
Anyway, I feel it’s helpful to stay with the Greek alphabet letters we’ve been using thus far. It’s a vaguely Star Trek-ish thing to do, plus it’s a recognizable pattern for those in the game. As a bonus, Zeta is only the sixth letter of the classic Greek alphabet, so we have a lot more letters left to us if we keep making new STO friends in the future. 🙂
Lastly, thanks to Marcase and the volunteer Admiralty staff of the 44th for keeping the Fleet operational in the day-to-day. I know you folks do a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the 44th running. Please know that it is appreciated!
Cheers,
Shaw

September 22, 2020 at 5:52 am #429119Thank you for the speedy replies, captains! They are much appreciated!
NZ Mike, I am honored by your generosity in offering to help me invest my way to an Inquiry-class via Exchange PvP, but the process sounds too much like work for the both of us, even though I’m sure that you have the lobes for it. Heh heh.
Would I like to own an Inquiry-class starship? As a Trek fan, sure. But I play STO to have fun, and once fun starts to feel like work, I feel like I’m doing it wrong.
I will keep what you’ve told me in mind, however and, if for some reason, I can’t sleep at night without my dear Inquiry-class pixel starship, I will reach out to you sir. But for right now, I’m going to let things ride.
By the way, Mike, I’m grateful that you changed your in-game alias from Holy Schitt. I rarely replied to you in chat because I couldn’t bring myself to call you “Schitt”. It just seemed so … disrespectful, somehow, and the internet is already chock full of disrespect already. I didn’t want to add to the pile. Heh.
Marcase, you’re right, I am a little blue that I can’t zoom around in an Inquiry ship, but they’re only pixel toys at the end of the day — I’m sure I will survive, my friend!
Thank you, everyone, yet again. Be safe and be well!
See you around the galaxy,
Shaw

January 6, 2020 at 5:29 pm #425901Akula,
I appreciate the detailed update, Frosty. Thank you so very much!
I’ve been quiet over year-end in terms of gameplay, logging in only to do short daily-type things, but I expect to be back in the game more completely soon enough. As such, it’s very helpful to see such a comprehensive report of how things are going for the mighty 44th in Star Trek Online.
Take care of yourself, Frosty, and I’ll see all of you good captains again in-game soonest!

July 26, 2018 at 11:36 pm #267224Chanfron, last time I checked the white-quality Cardie boffs I originally mentioned are still for sale at the Bridge Officer recruiter NPC on ESD — so it’s not a complete paywall or shut-out.

June 5, 2018 at 3:36 pm #234556Another thing I discovered, which put an end to some graphics problems in STO I’d been having for a long time:
Some time ago, I switched to an AMD Radeon video card from an Nvidia GeForce brand card. No problem there, and I was tech-savvy enough to make sure all the old GeForce drivers were gone (I have tools for that, as I’m sure many of you do).
BUT
What I didn’t realize until I did some drive cleanup recently, is the the now-Nvidia owned PhysX drivers still existed on my hard drive as a separate install. I deleted them simply because they were now irrelevant — but then, 99% of my graphical issues with STO disappeared as soon as I did so.
I mention this in case it’s helpfel to someone else. Also, I don’t do “GeForce vs. Radeon” brand wars debates. Use whatever tech you prefer. If it works for you, it works for you.
Be well all,
Shaw

June 28, 2017 at 8:40 pm #187528Thanks for the in-depth report Marcase! It’s always appreciated.
I’ve been spending a fair amount of time in Sickbay lately — nothing serious, but it does keep me sidelined to a degree — so I haven’t been logging in as often I typically have, but I’m still out here, and I still play each month.
Cheers all,

January 7, 2017 at 6:13 am #178723I think the ship we’ve seen is bloody ugly, but then, I was never a huge fan of Picard’s Enterprise either, so what do I know? 🙂
Not to worry, I don’t plan on running spoilers for the show here — I understand the desire to see the show “cold”, as they say. I actually hate spoilers myself. I just figured people might be curious to see the actress cast in the lead.
Cheers,

October 8, 2016 at 1:56 am #164944Thanks for the update, Marcase! Your log reports are always appreciated.
Shaw here — I’m not gone, but this has sort of been an unhealthy year for me. We’re presently trying some new meds to help sort things out, but I’m not quite sorted yet, so I’m not logging in to STO as much lately.
The illness is not going to kill me, or anything so dramatic, it’s just … inconvenient.
I expect to be back when the new content drops. I hope to help out with building up the K-13 Fleet addition — restoring a classic-style station for the 44th Fleet sounds like fun!
Be good to one another, and take care of yourselves. I’ll see you soonest, captains,

July 26, 2016 at 7:36 am #164629An Update …
Turns out Star Trek: Discovery will not be set between Kirk’s time and Picard’s time after all — according to showrunner Bryan Fuller — but he’s not saying a lot about what the series will involve.
For what Fuller does say, you can read the interview at the link below.

January 17, 2016 at 3:59 pm #163567Hey captains, Shaw here,
I’m still fighting this virus thing (it’s sort of a mutant cousin of the whooping cough) which can last as long as eight weeks (!!!), but I am feeling a lot better lately.
Thank you for all the good wishes — they helped when things were miserable.
I may be popping into STO for short stints going forward from today. I’m feeling good enough to sit at a computer again.
I probably won’t be much for any in-game Fleet runs just yet (I can’t guarantee I’ll have the focus to stay in-game for a set length of time), but that will come back eventually too.
It will be good to get the ol’ starship back out into space again, regardless. 🙂
See you around the galaxy, good captains. As ever, have fun!
