I’ll probably miss tonight. Late night maintenance 11pm – 2am tonight, so I’ll probably be napping this evening. Hopefully join you on Thursday!
Sorry I missed the fleet gathering. I, too, went to Vulcan on my own earlier, before going out with some friends. I asked the bartender for Romulan ale. He understood my request, but regretfully told me he had none to offer.
I think it’s telling that I’m seeing Facebook posts, tweets, likes and retweets from across the entire spectrum of my friends, acquaintances, followers, and followees. Regardless of politics, no matter how different or similar the groups may be. He seems to have touched something in them all.
Repeating what I said on Facebook:
There isn’t a lot of optimistic sci-if these days. If Trek were distilled to a single idea, I think it would be that humanity can be, must be, better. The show was never perfect at communicating that idea, but it tried, and I think it owed a good deal of the success it had to Nimoy. He seemed to understand it.
Thanks — I figured that was probably the case. Seemed more akin to the Ambassador class situation than anything else.
I should note that I’m more likely to be around for the later part of that time range than the earlier part. I generally get home around 5:15 central and then spend some time with my wife before getting into the game. But I’ll join in when I can.
Sounds like fun — been hard for me to run space missions for a few days, as I’ve had a lot of gear on upgrade timers. A chance to do some ground missions would be welcome.
A bit of advice would also be welcome — I recently put together a Nukara set. It’s got an AOE group defensive three-piece bonus, but the energy resistance on the environmental suit is lower than my standard body armor. Is that a worthwhile tradeoff? How important are those resistances in ground missions?
Do any of you use 8tracks? Kind of like a streaming radio app, except instead of being algorithm-driven, people essentially create mix tapes on the site, and you listen to those. It’s no turntable.fm, which sadly died a year or two ago, but it’s pretty good for getting an idea of somebody’s tastes and doing some music discovery.
My tastes were largely formed in the 90’s — I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s, but not much of the music then really got to me. I’m actually going to see my first live music in probably about ten years in April, when Sleater-Kinney comes to town.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QBa5U3RSqYLately, it seems like almost every band that really grabs my attention is a duo with (mostly) female vocals, including:

Tennis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA4W3YRZqPA
Sleigh Bells: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiwcUdX7XMw
Purity Ring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmRraoL9v7kA couple that I’ve recently come to enjoy that don’t fit this pattern are:
Cayucas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io8PqddrRIs
Dum Dum Girls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDYRQX6FPQQReally, as far as the way we experience the Star Trek universe through the game or the shows, exploration has really never been anything more than the macguffin — the pretense by which the characters are moved into position to begin the story. I don’t believe exploration can realistically serve any other purpose in the game — which means, in essence, that exploration is really just the beginning of a PvE “episode.” So more episodes is what I voted for.
Regarding the related discussion some of us had in-game the other day about shield hardness, and the fact that nobody really knows for sure exactly what it is: Geko confirmed for me on Twitter last night that shield hardness is indeed resistance. Not certain of exact mechanics. E.g., does 10% hardness multiply damage to shields by 0.9, or divide it by 1.1? He didn’t answer that, but said he may go into the math on an upcoming podcast. (I realize this may all seem unimportant given that NPC shields are not a significant concern, but I figure deobfuscating mechanics is always good.)
I’ve loaded up my Sheshar with six of the emitters (plus a wise-angle quantum torp and a rapid-fire missile) for some broadsidey goodness. Yeah, not optimal, but it looks pretty great and is a lot of fun.
The missile launcher is kind of an experiment. The rate of fire is very high (2 sec reload), and it triggers projectile officers. Rough estimate is that it should increase the rate of fire of the wide-angle quantum by about 60% with a single projectile doff. And as it has the same targeting arc, they can both fire full-time. We’ll see how it works out. I may wind up replacing it with another emitter.
Thanks! I do have a tendency to make some choices based on theme or aesthetics rather than pure performance (e.g., I’m unlikely to load up a Federation ship with energy weapons that aren’t phasers, unless it’s something entirely non-canon like an Atrox, in which case I feel there’s a lot more room for creativity). But within my little self-imposed limitations like that, I’m sure I’ll have plenty of advice to ask for.
It might have the useful side effect of bringing down the price on the Plasmonic Leech.
Many thanks! I’ll join you this evening!
