Oh my gosh!  I was playing STO last night and from the living room I hear the all to familiar Star Trek theme song.  I couldn’t help but go look and my wife had found TOS Episode 1 on Netflix.  You know the one with Captain pike.

At first I didn’t know what to do.  Had an alien taken over my wife?  Should I run and hide somewhere?  So instead I sat down and watched.

I couldn’t stop laughing and my wife had to hush me a couple of times.  I remember thinking, did she just shush me?

It was so hokey looking.  The game on my laptop has better graphics then they did back then.  And that was high tech I bet.  They were passing pieces of paper to Captain Pike and using a clip board.  He was signing with a pen.  I mean really?  Paper on the Enterprise?  And, Spock was hilarious the way he was talking.  The space scenes … wow!

If you have never seen TOS Episode 1 or haven’t for a long while check it out.  It will be worth the laugh if nothing else.

I’m asuming that was The Cage, and hey that’s the first of two pilot episodes (the second introducing Kirk), and yeah they can look hokey in a “look at our hi-tech cardboard bridge background” kind of way, but it’s the story that really gave TOS its longevity. And sure enough there are some ultimate terribad episodes (“Spocks brain”) but TOS is the absolute beginning. You’re officially ‘one of us’ now 😀

If you want to feed your inner nerdism some dessert, listen to MissionLogs The Cage break-down and titbits of each TOS episode – they’re reviewing EVERY Star Trek episode – I listen to them when I’m on the road.

This is nice too; scroll down and see the remastered differences.

And your wive turning on Star Trek; I think she may be under the influence of one of your telepathic Boffs ^^

… and in 1969 they landed on the moon with the computational power of an antique cellphone. If you mockingly focus on the cellphone aspect you kindasorta miss the achievement. A bit like giggling at the jawbone-of-an-ass/pilum/gladius combo that held an empire together for almost 1000 years. Sans iPhone.

In 1969, I had nightmares about the hissing, latex-lathered Gorn from the episode ‘Arena.’ I watched ‘The Corbomite Maneuvre’ without blinking once. I think I still have a crush on Susan Oliver. Not that I’d ever tell anyone.

And I’ll take hokey TOS over whizzbang STD or the lensflarespin JJVerse, anyday. Except ‘The Apple.’ With David Soul. That can be given a viking funeral. Oh and (as Marcase mentioned) ‘Spock’s Brain.’ Burn, baby, burn.

Well I still love the TOS, yes compared to the new Star Trek shows in may come off as “hokey looking” but as @Anukis hinted at it was a different time, TOS was one of the few shows when it came out that my folks would let me “stay up” to watch so nothing but fond memories of the show.

In 50 years (LoL in 2068) from now, our current shows will be “hokey looking” 🙂 that is the great thing about time it keeps marching on, even when we drop out of the march.

I can watch TOS anytime.  Totally classic!  It set the stage for everything else…..but, it is based on another classic “Forbidden Planet”.   Do yourself a favor and watch that movie.

That robot paved the way for all the rest in movies and tv shows.

Forbidden plant is awesome still, even though it was make in 1956, not seen it in a while so will have to dig it out sometime, I would like a remake but you know they would ruin it like usual. Day the Earth Stood Still(1951) is great, 2008 remake is awful, War of the Worlds (2005) was good but I prefer the 1953 version, prefer the elegant ships and awesome weapon sounds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5H4yK_tiGI

Another dated show I’m fond of rewatching is Blakes 7. Hokey sets and special effects but I loved the characters and stories, and still do. That’s another series I’d love to see again, but like Chanfron I dread today’s reboots.

If I remember rightly they have tried several times to do new Blakes 7 but never got off the ground, a new series could work but again they probably ruin it and the characters, at least we know who they can use to play servalan.

I have different memories of Blake’s 7, more akin to Buck Rogers I’m afraid. Beeglybeeglybeegly.

As for semi-hokey sets but some damned good characters, acting and storytelling… how about U.F.O. and Space 1999 (first season only, before Fred Freiberger got his claws into it and it went all doolallykersplit, something he also did to TOS season 3)?

Yup S1 of Space1999 was awesomesauce. I owned an Eagle model kit as a wee youngster. Still one of the more interesting spaceship designs imho.

These days only S4 of The Expanse gets me exited (I never read any of the books so it’s new to me). The Picard series is another but it’s such a production fubar (moved to 2020 etc etc) that I’m also dreading it. Not much else on my radar I’d take the time to sit down for these days…

Eagle kit? Here too. And the Angel Interceptor from Captain Scarlet is still a beautiful design from the 60’s… as are a lot of designs from the Anderson stable, come to think. Not to mention the Connie (and refit), D7 and even Chang’s Bird of Prey design from ToS. But then I adore the Ford Model T and the Laocoön!!

Some old stuff never loses value… The Midwich Cuckoos, War of The Worlds, Forbidden Planet, The Day of the Triffids, Invasion of the Bodysnatchers… and who can fault Gort? Many original Twilight Zone episodes (not the PC D-I-E remake rubbish) rock… even the Nightmare at 20,000 Feet episode with Shatner… despite the dated critter on the plane wing!

With you on The Expanse and am willing to tentatively look forward to Picard. Even though many NextGen stories across all the seasons made me wince (and overall, I’m not a fan of Jean Luc), I truly hope they find a way not to go full Discovery on Picard.

    Finger’s crossed.

    🙂

Hoplites wore skirts, Roman legionaries wore capri’s, just about everyone wore hats ’til the late 20thC… powdered wigs, beauty spots, codpieces… whether it be pith helmets, platform shoes or a submariner in a sexy string vest, fashion is fun!
