I’m at level 52 now, and I’m kind of lost as to what I should be doing for both my character/ship and the fleet.  I’ve been going through Paradoxical’s guides, but still kind of struggling. Character is an engineer, and ship is a tier 4 currently.  Thanks in advance for any info help.

Post your ship build here on the forum under https://startrek.44thfleet.com/forums/forum/secured-area/builds-powers-and-mechanics/.

Make sure to check out the cookie-cutter build setup for Tier 4 ships under https://startrek.44thfleet.com/links/first-time-sto-ship-setup/ (scroll down).

Post your ships equipment/weapons, bridge officer stations, your traits and Space Duty Officers, and we will help you with a good setup.

Don’t worry too much though: Tier 4 and Tier 5 ships you will discard eventually with (much) better Tier 6/Fleet Tier 6 ships with Mk XV weapons/kit – you get a few free ones as you play.

We will help you explaining how to craft your own Purple/Very Rare quality weapons/shields which is surprisingly cheap and murderously effective. This is unfortunately not comunicated well (or at all) in the game.

Edit: even a Tier 4 ship with purple/very rare kit can steam roll episodes on Advanced level, we’ll get you sorted.

And no worries – we’ve all been there :).

Thanks!  I should have added that I am still really enjoying STO, just with things like Duty Officers, Admiralty, and stuff like that I am somewhat lost with what to do.  I’ll post my ship build shortly.  Definitely need help with that.  When I first started looking at and play STO I didn’t realize how involved it was.  Not that that’s a bad thing, there is just a lot to learn.

I’m also really close to being able to get a T6 ship.

So much to do. So many paths forward. As Marcase said, we’ve all been there.

My (relatively uncomplicated!) advice would be…

Discover your own playstyle, as in how you enjoy playing STO.

This helps you narrow your future choices as far as gear, spec and builds go. Once you have a picture of how you like to play, you can concentrate on stuff that will help you further improve your playstyle (and improve your DPS / survivability / manoeuvrability etc along the way).

For example – and generally-speaking – if you like firing beam arrays then the way forward is most likely to be light/medium/heavy cruisers, battlecruisers and dreadnoughts. If you prefer cannons, escorts might suit better. If you enjoy hangar pets, carriers ftw! If you like mega-mobility and speed… tight-turns… if you enjoy casting space wizard gravwells … if you prefer torpedoes… if you enjoy mines… if you enjoy firing at targets to the front, side or from every conceivable angle simultaneously… if you prefer survival and self/team buffing/healing… if you enjoy ground maps with teammates or BOffs… all of these things (and more) help you narrow your focus and then target particular ships, gear, traits, specialisations to work towards.

Knowing this kind of stuff can save you time, effort and cost in acquiring and upgrading stuff that doesn’t fit your preferred playstyle. Knowing this kind of stuff can stop burnout caused by not enjoying the ship you’ve worked so hard to build only to find it’s just ‘not you’… or simply not enjoying the game itself. Knowing this kind of stuff can help keep the game fun. Hope that makes sense.

Once you have an good idea of what it is you enjoy doing with your time in-game… and how… you can get into specifics (again, based on your own preferences)… which weapon and energy type… which torp… which engines/shields… which skill-tree and traits… which reputation… etcetc… to concentrate on.

Some things are a constant no matter what your playstyle preferences are… you’ll need dilithium, EC, reputation marks, XP for specialisation points, salvage for re-engineering etc… but most choices you end up making are far better made for fun and your personal playstyle. In my opinion, ofc.

Once you know what you like… then the 44th’s guides, FAQ’s and ship builds (and members) are an excellent source of ways to improve, things to aim for, and specific solutions and how-to’s. Fleetfolk can (and do!) help with in-game missions, TFO’s and stuff via the fleetbank, as well as with crafting and such.

The kinds of things you can do while you’re finding your feet… and after… are…

    Take your time.

    • Work through Episodes, particularly those with good rewards… for XP and rewards. Some episode arcs open up new space maps, so can’t really be ignored.
    • Do daily events, as they occur… for whatever event reward is on offer.
    • Do endeavours, as you are able. These reward dil, EC, XP, mark boxes and build up perks that reward bonuses to many game-stats.
    • Do at least one daily patrol, for rep marks and bonus dil. The more patrols, the merrier as they are repeatable things that you can do swiftly and solo for dil, rep marks, loot, ship-mastery and EC. Don’t bore yourself, though.
    • Do the daily Fleet Research Lab assignment, for dil.
    • Do TFO’s, for rep marks (on Advanced if you want to build up the rep Elite marks).
    • Do DOff assignments as you can. For XP (though some reward quantities of dil/EC/special rewards).
    • Do Admiralty assignments as you can. For Dil etc.
    • Sell any loot you don’t want to a vendor (do not recycle, you get less EC), to build up EC.

As you play you will become more and more familiar. Absolutely.

Hope that wall-of-text (sorry) helped. One thing you can be sure of… that ‘lost’ feeling will go. Another thing is… you’re not alone!

    Craig,

I feel your pain brother.  I just posted almost the identical quandaries myself.  and Anukis…nice to see I’m not the only one comfortable commenting at length.  🙂

    Hi Craig,

Looking at your kit, it is in need of updating, but since you are still level 52 you don’t need to go ‘gold plated’ yet, but after level 50 the curve is steepening and the NPCs you will encounter cannont be easily brushed aside anymore.

Your Assault Cruiser is getting long in the teeth, and it’s low base stats will always be a weakpoint even if you buff it with extra consoles/traits etc., so if you can start looking at (free) T6 ships or you can buy a Fleet variant just with Fleet Ship Modules – and a boatload of dilithium – but it is an alternative to zen (there are some drawbacks to that route but we’ll get to that later).

Your weapons and tac consoles should be upgraded to purple and the highest Mk available to you, but that is your choice as that can get expensive. Honestly it’s cheaper to craft Purple Mk II weapons and upgrade them with phoenix upgrades to Mk XIV, and same for your tac consoles.
It will be a tremendous increase in damage dealing.

I will mail you a purple Resilient shield Mk XIII.

Your bridge stations. As much fun Boarding Party is, it has to go. It does little and just takes up a Boff slot. Same with Eject Warp plasma: fun to be sure, but does little damage, and by now you need to squeeze out as much DPS as you can.

You are an Engineer so Miracle Worker is your bonus ability and that will now be your “Oh sh!t!” button.

    Change your engineer seats to:
Zarva – Eng Team, Aux to Dampeners 1, EPTW 3, Reverse Shld Polarity 3
Hal – Eng Team, Aux to Dampeners 1, EPTW 3

Yes, 2 copies of Engineering team is redundant (their cooldowns get in their way) but there isn’t anything else useful for now – don’t train these Boffs with exotic powers as you will (should) replace them when you reach level 60.

When you reach level 60, skip most episodes and (re-)play the “Sunrise” and “Stormbound” – they give the Quantum Phase weapon set and the Quantum Phase Def/Eng/Shield space set. They are solid sets to have in your inventory and will serve you very well.

Thanks for the info.  Very helpful.  I’ve leveled up a fair amount, about to hit max.  I’ll update what I have again.  I went with engineer and a cruiser because of being new I thought maybe being on the tankier side would help.  I clearly have some stuff I need to improve a lot.  Like I said before (I think…) theres a lot to STO, but I am enjoying it and learning.

Craig while I am not the best in the Fleet with builds, if you just need someone to team with just let me know. I do not play Feds a lot but I do have two Fed Captains; One at Lvl 60 and one at Lvl 19 so I can log off with my KDF and jump in and help.
