Greetings 44th,
As most of you may have already heard, there’s a massive skill revamp coming, which will affect not just your captains’, but also console skills, stats and game-mechanics. Nothing is concrete just yet, and the first iteration (of many, no doubt) of this revamp will go live no sooner than ‘late spring’ with Season 11.5 (no firm date on that yet either).
Your 44th Command Staff is keeping an eye on things (thanks Damix and Fatman) and there will be many more leaks, rumors and tribble tests before a final version will hit Holodeck, so any info available right now is more or less speculation and pre-patch/nerf test data. So far it seems the top min-max gamers with highly specialized builds may (repeat; may) take a beating, since some synergies may change or plain disappear from the game.
BTW it’s been confirmed that we will all receive a free respec – actually it will most probably be a total wipe of your current skill points – clean slate for new adventures, that sort of thing.

There is however one thing we can take from all of the early gossip, and that is to err on the side of caution and pace or limit Elite gear buys. Things like Fleet Embassy Consoles and other Elite and crafted gear that highly focus on specialized extra abilities like (+PartGen) or (-Threat) for example will get a revamp; they may become stronger or weaker, no telling right now.
Since there’s also a new trend now in STO focusing on ‘DPS Tank’ builds, which rely heavily on (+Threat) consoles, we strongly recommend to hold off on, or at least slow down, any major Elite (Embassy/Fleet/epic crafted) gear buys since the mechanic may or may not change – save your dili/zen for Season 11.5.
Personally I’m looking forward to this revamp with both interest and trepidation, but so far STO has never really let me down. I have faith that this will eventually be a good thing after all the dust has settled, so any alarmist vitriol being spewed on the official STO/Reddit forums are to be taken as the usual grain of salt to be dumped and dissolved in Andorian ice.
