Even though it’s another RNGarbage mechanic, I’m still thinking this is cheaper and faster than making equipment and upgrading it over and over just to get the mods you want.
It’s really a tradeoff. EC vs Dil. With the old system, you would spend an insane amount of Dil to do all of that upgrading. With this system, you spend less dil (only craft one item and re-engineer it) and some EC (purchasing items to salvage (at least I do)). Of course, with salvage giving you R&D materials, it offsets some of the cost and actually makes its easier to craft items to salvage, as you recoop some of the loss.
Remember the saying “There is more than one way to skin a cat” (sorry Balt). Cryptic just gave us an alternative way to get what we want, and depending on how you do it, a cheaper way.
