Well while at work today, and during my breaks reading this forum and STO Wiki. I started feeling a little nostalgic, so I looked up one of my old ships (my first ship) USS El Paso LKA-117 from my U.S. Navy days.

Here She sits at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility, Philadelphia, Awaiting disposal 🙁

She was my home/work place for three years, so I hope you all do not mind I am going to post her picture her, as a way to keep her memory alive.

I can sympathise. My old boats Zeeleeuw and Dolfijn (and yes, we call subs ‘boten’ or boats, not ships) are still going strong after several upgrades, but are slated to be replaced in the next 5-10 years after which they’ll prob turn into razorblades. I miss them as I had some exciting times aboard, but you tend to remember the best of times instead of the dull, dangerous and dreary days/weeks/months underwater.

Respect, to you both.  And yes, Subs are always Boats, not Ships. Probably for some reason only known to Admirals.

Historically, A ship was a vessel that could carry cargo. (Yep, Sea vessels carry CARgo, road transports are SHIPments. Go figure)

Anyway, so anything big enough to carry substantial cargo is a ship. Given the size of modern submarines, they probably qualify but I suppose it’s too late to change.

My only service was infantry reserve so not much to boast about. Still, as they say,  Infrantry holds.

The El Paso is an Amphibious Cargo Ship – Landing craft – K(C)argo – Amphibious.

Here is more about the class she belonged too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charleston-class_amphibious_cargo_ship

Well Marcase, with all due respect. If you were in the USN you would have the Nickname – Bubblehead for serving on a Submarine 🙂

See I am a Gator, an nickname for a sailor who served in the Amphibious Fleet. 🙂

But thank you Marcase for your service, and to the Koninklijke Marineas well 07

Well, if  ‘Serving’ means 6 weeks of basic and 3 days on the Enfield .303 I guess so..

Well I know from my experience every nation is different on how they run their military. If you served you full length of time, you served in my book.

Great pics guys.  Thanks for posting.  My son was in the Navy on the USS Abraham Lincoln.  Nuclear powered Air Craft Carrier.  I won’t post a pic but man what a ship/boat.  5000 crew.  Like a floating city.

You guys probably know this already but I thought I would post.  This thread got me to thinking …

Indeed. Was some of the best times of my life. Got to see alot of the world. Proud history with that name, CV6 Enterprise was the most highly decorated ship of WW2. My Enterprise was the first nuclear powered carrier and also highly decorated.

F.Y.I the difference between boats and ships: Ships carry boats (lifeboats included), boats don’t carry ships.
