Greetings fleet !
It’s a 44th tradition that once a year we pull out all the stops and go full head-to-head in that fuzzy furball of chaos we call Player vs Player. To some this is actually the real STO ‘capital E’ Endgame, where all your wits and golden kit needs to be as sharp as a dilithium crystal. There are usually nice prizes to be won and a lockbox key for just showing up, so everybody wins.
The winner will of course be added to the 44th’s Red Squad, and receive the unique PvP ribbon !
Like last year, the 2018 PvP tournament will be a round-robin ground+space 1v1 and/or 2v2 or even multi-vs-1; we’ll team up novices and veterans for balancing. We would like to get around 10-12 contestants for an interesting tournament. The usual rules apply; all ships and abilities (including cloaking) are allowed but you can only use the same toon. But you may switch ships/weapons/kit between matches if you’d like to. If you suck canal water in space you can make up for that on ground, and vice versa.
See this post for the previous tournament.
We’ll see if we can get the first matches started early April – I expect another featured episode and/or STO event to go live around then so we will give it ample time.
Sign up on this thread if interested, and add your preferred time (evening, weekends etc). Keep in mind that although we will (re)schedule matches to accomodate players when needed but if you sign up we will count on you.
Step forward captains !
"Boldly bashing Borg to bits since 2012..."March 4, 2018 at 6:46 pm #197658Taking Esria, with the Vanguard and her drone build on the ground.. Good times for me are April 1st to April 5th since I’ll be at home.
March 5, 2018 at 9:57 pm #197662Also, I will be donating 30 lockbox keys to the prizes and I will not go for any of the prizes except that sweet ribbon and bragging rights.
March 6, 2018 at 12:34 am #197687I have one suggestion for this year’s tourny. A mercy rule. I participated in the last PVP event and it was clear after 2 or 3 matches in space that I had no chance. Having to suffer through another 12 more losses (I unequipped my shields and anything that buffed my hull or shields to make it faster) was painfully boring. I know this means the people that win won’t get the quest rewards, but those shouldn’t be the priority.
Open to other thoughts or opinions.
That having been said, I’m in.

March 6, 2018 at 1:11 am #197690Thanks Caine, good suggestion. I’ve actually been thinking about something like that, and one of the reasons I’m encouraging a teamed 2v2 – this is supposed to be fun – but timezones have a rotten habit throwing a wrench in that warpcore. Considering there will be at least one space ‘tank’ build in the tournament the “15-kill for finish” rule will probably go anyway. What this originally was for is to prevent someone sitting cloaked for hours untill the other player got fed up and yielded, but thankfully this never happened.
Will work on a new set of rules to accomodate a similar ‘mercy rule’.
"Boldly bashing Borg to bits since 2012..."March 6, 2018 at 7:35 am #197708Well, I may have a solution to the “Vanguard Problem” (not my words lol). We could put in a draw rule. If after 5 minutes there are no kills and both parties agree, we could call a match a draw and each person gets 1 point.
Since this puts all the pressure on me to win ground to have a chance to win and there is no point loss, it seems fair.
What you think?
March 6, 2018 at 3:15 pm #1977285 minutes is a bit too short, I’d rather go with if no kills for 45 minutes, which as you know in PvP fly by faster than you’d think. Plus there’s no harm in giving it all you got in a tough fight – this is a Top Gun Tournament afterall 🙂
There’s still time tomix and match the rules, right now I’m looking for enough captains. We’ll get the juices flowing with some fun fleet furballs – the classic 44th knuckle bar-fight on Nimbus and the many-shuttle-vs-1 carrier space pvp for starters, soon(tm).
"Boldly bashing Borg to bits since 2012..."March 6, 2018 at 6:48 pm #197738Well, whatever time you think would be best. As for the funsies, I’m in!
March 7, 2018 at 12:40 am #197746I guess count me in, no idea what I will bring, probably something large and cumbersome and flat….or maybe something tiny and fast…..and ground, well, uggg, we will see lol
with my schedule finding time for matches will be the hard part, I will drop out if its near the end and I haven been able to make it work

March 7, 2018 at 3:56 am #197752Yeah, I’ll sign up. Probably bring Noraal for the science on the ground. Not sure about what to do about the space combat with her though….mmmm

March 12, 2018 at 6:07 am #198071Bumping this, looks like we have about 6 now – if you haven’t already, pls make a post here. We consider a minimum of 8 for a decent tournament, so two more heroes needed !
And yes, Ground *will* be part of the pvp (insert evil laugh).
We’ll start in April, but there will be no strict timeline, so official pvp matches can occur whenever you and your opponent are able or just happen to log on – we will be extremely flexible to accomodate everybody but we’re aiming for a 3-month period.

March 19, 2018 at 8:14 pm #203207Awesome, welcome ! I think we have a nice line-up now. Will keep this open for a week more, and then we’ll slowly ramp up to the first matches.
