I have a question for anyone who has played STO via Steam for some time. I should start off by saying I don’t like Steam. I don’t use it for gaming but have an account for a game someone wanted to give me some years back. I just recently had to dig Steam back up because of a $20 Steam gift card I’d won. The only thing I’d want to use it on would be to buy zen. The trouble is that I still play STO on the old pre Arc launcher. I’m concerned about linking my STO account to Steam in order to buy zen with my Steam wallet. If I link my account to Steam to do so is there any way to continue playing STO without having to have the Steam program running? And have there been (or are there currently) problems with running STO that are unique to it being linked to Steam?
June 22, 2015 at 3:31 pm #162662been a long time but i used steam briefly in order to get the old steam runner ship. had some issues, don’t recall exactly what. i finally got the ship out of steam and never went back.
for what it is worth i have never had a problem with ARC.
June 22, 2015 at 3:39 pm #162663Afaik you can run STO from its original game launcher, Steam or Arc without any trouble – I have the game installed and run it from its original ‘star trek online.exe’ launcher, but I can also start it from the installed Arc launcher (which I only use when there’s a promotion or free give-away).
You should be able to run all three side-by-side, (just have to pick the right button to push), so you should be able to claim your Steam gift card on Steam, then switch back to your normal game short-cut. However, I’ve personnally never used Steam for STO – might be worth to visit the official forum to make sure.
"Boldly bashing Borg to bits since 2012..."June 23, 2015 at 8:11 am #162664I originally downloaded STO through Steam when I first discovered the game and played it for a good two years through it. Never treated me wrong, the Steam Wallet transactions were instant 100% of the time. I use Steam for other games, anyway, but if I want to buy ZEN, I use Steam rather than anything else, just because I’ve never had one issue.
Arc is too heavy on my system, which isn’t top of the line, but isn’t budget either, it’s a nice little gaming rig, but the ads that continuously scroll on Arc get me, and it uses alot more bandwidth to run in the background, even minimized to the tray. I have limited internet during the daytime hours, so I have that to consider.
Other than that, on a normal day, I run STO directly from the .exe file like Marcase, only to switch to Steam for ZEN purchases (mainly because I’ve been using it for years, and have nothing but praise for the gaming client.) I’m just a little confused on what you mean by “linking your STO account to Steam.” When I use Steam to play STO for ZEN, etc, it just acts as a launcher and support (Steam In-Game overlay).
On a side-note, I’ve only launched STO from Arc once, and that was for the free Ferengi shuttle. xD
