Back in the 90’s, I was in the vintage scooter scene in Seattle. We’d have big rallies, anywhere from fifty to a couple hundred vintage Vespas, Lambrettas, etc. riding around together.
Occasionally, we’d join up with a motorcycle rally, so we’d have people on enormous Harleys riding along next to people on tiny Vespas until we reached a park or something and had a huge beer-filled cookout.
One thing I learned from the motorcycle people is that some of them had scooters or very small motorcycles of their own, and they would get together for what they called “tiny tiddler runs,” where they’d leave their big motorcycles behind and ride around on their small bikes for a day.
So I was wondering: would anyone be interested in occasionally getting together in Tier 1 starships, decked out in the best equipment you can install, and taking on some STFs? Normal mode, I would presume. But I have this little Oberth light science vessel, and it seems a shame to use it just to travel to Risa occasionally. Might be fun to see what we can accomplish in such ships.
June 14, 2015 at 9:53 am #162598A while back we were mulling over doing PVP in Tier 1 ships, with basic mk X kit and no exotic consoles, that was right before the T-6 and ship trait introduction iirc. Basically all the new traits and new consoles killed PVP because it’s very elitist – get super epic or get out, kind of way.
Fleet Tier-1 PVP is a bit complicated because it’s hard to check if all participants are adhering to the ‘no traits, mk X’ rule. But that’s an aside.Sure, we can do some Tier-1 ship runs (with mk XIV gear). Besides STFs we can do lots of other stuff too – Gorn Minefield for example, even (re-run) episodes for special loot to dust off our hangar queens. I remember Cross showing up during Elite Borg STFs in a Constellation. 😀
On a side-note, with the Summer Event live, nevermind summer in general, a lot of fleet members are afk, so activity is lower than usual – it’s just that summer dip affecting all MMOs.
"Boldly bashing Borg to bits since 2012..."June 14, 2015 at 10:27 am #162599i remember doing hive space elite and Cross was in her constellation and i think we got the optionals too
June 14, 2015 at 12:36 pm #162600I remember reading the PvP discussion — PvP’s not my thing, but it sounded pretty cool for those who enjoy competitive play.
Is this the sort of thing we should try to schedule, or just try to throw together when there are people online?

June 14, 2015 at 3:09 pm #162601I can think of many ways to be very overpowered. With no restrictions, the Cell ship and Tuffi are probably always going to win (Lt Uni). The T’varo with a full SRO crew, BO1, EPtW1, and a trusty tractor beam (or potentially a torpedo bomber) would be the winner every time if the trader ships are eliminated. Or of course one could stack up damage immunities and never die with traits.
And that’s the problem with PvP, no way to really account for things, no way to reasonably limit broken mechanics. Now using broken mechanics on NPCs, that’s worth doing. Clicky console spam would be the way to go for sure, kind of like shuttle builds.
"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." - Marcus Cole, Babylon 5

June 16, 2015 at 7:02 pm #162603KamxamFleet MemberWhat’s a tier 1 ship? 😆
June 16, 2015 at 12:11 am #162604A Lieutenant ship basically, the Miranda, Constitution, Oberth, Bop – the very first ship(s) you get when you start the game. The ones with only 2 weapon slots, just one step up from Shuttles (which are sometimes more powerfull).
The most fun I had was doing shuttle vs carrier – me in a Recluse with just ONE omni-beam, no consoles, no shield (!) against a horde of shuttle-craft with max everything. Shuttles would win if they killed the carrier just once. The Recluse’s omni-beam and fighter pets (elite scorpions in that run) we’re trying to fend off 4-5 shuttles that were causing havoc on my poor old trident. I could stay alive with just Hazard Emitters but the no heals rule prevented that (and was very, very hard to follow). It took a while but Blackout finally delivered the killing blow; it was like 20-1 but the 1 kill was enough for the shuttle party to win. Intense and great fun though 😀
"Boldly bashing Borg to bits since 2012..."June 17, 2015 at 1:59 pm #162605I think a typical Tier 1 ship layout is two weapons front, one aft, two device slots, one each tac/sci/eng boff slots, and one of each console. They’re generic ships, not really geared toward any particular career. There are T1 ships available for zen (the Oberth is one) that may add one additional console slot and perhaps a special console, and may add the typical cruiser/escort/sci abilities. E.g., the Oberth has sensor analysis, the Constitution probably has some cruiser commands, etc.
June 24, 2015 at 9:35 am #162606Did you managed to do the Tiny Tiddler Run? We could schedule this in order to make it work, with forum announcement, etc.
June 24, 2015 at 1:35 pm #162607Nothing yet — my caregiving responsibilities at home have really ballooned of late. Most of my game time has been spent on menial tasks like building resources and spending them on upgrades. If anyone has ideas about what and when would work, fire away!
I’m also not sure we actually have a roster of five interested in participating!
June 24, 2015 at 2:03 pm #162608I’d be interested. I just don’t own a tier 1 ship. If given enough notice though I could pick one up. May not be quite ready to do it too soon though. The toon I’d prefer to do it on is level 46. So she’d need a few more levels. Keep me in the loop though. It sounds like fun.
June 25, 2015 at 6:16 am #162597I’d also be interested but don’t own one at the moment, I’ll go and check if I can reclaim the starting Tier 1 ship. This would be fun.
