Anyone who has ever been a parent is all too familiar with the sound of an insanely excited child rushing up to you with the words “Look (insert daddy or mommy here), look what I made!” bursting from their lips. Only to find something wholly unimpressive thrust in your face. Because we love them we don’t want to make them feel bad so we act impressed and say “Wow. Look at that would ya. It’s uh…well it’s really…really something. Maybe you could tell me all about it?” But really it just looks like a big ball of crap glued together with macaroni noodles on poster board. And we ask for them to tell us about it not because we’re interested but rather because we honestly have no idea what the hell it’s meant to be.
Today Cryptic ran up to me with a big, gluey, ball of macaroni crap excitedly proclaiming “Look what I made!” But because I love my children far more than I love Cryptic, my response was somewhat different. “What the hell is this garbage? You really want to pretend that you put effort into this pile of disappointment?”
I exchanged enough dilithium to buy the flagships back in December. I knew they were coming and I was certain that I would want them. But after seeing the stats that were released today I realize that I’ve a pile of zen that will continue to wait for something worthy to come along and make me want to spend it. The Federation ones are lackluster. Why isn’t at least the tactical one a dreadnaught? All three of the Romulan ones are. So why not at the very least the tactical ones for Feds and Klingons as well? Not to forget that the starship traits look incredibly unimpressive.
There’s just nothing about these ships that warrants the excitement I felt at the prospect of them back in December. That does, admittedly add to the feeling of being let down. I think they could be a nice addition to the shipyards of some. But to me they don’t stack up to what I already have and will have to take a pass for now.
February 9, 2016 at 1:58 pm #163877If the Commander seating in each variant were appropriate to the profession, I think I could have fun with one of these on my science captain, but alas, it is not. That said, I have an engineering captain in a Odyssey, and I will happily upgrade him to a Sojourner, though I may fiddle with the costume a bit. Stats aside, I really like what they did with the modeling.
February 9, 2016 at 2:12 pm #163876I’ll readily admit that part of the reason for my disappointment in them is that at the mention of coming T6 flagships, I was hooked. I imagined them to be innovative. They’d do something with them that they hadn’t done before. They’re flagships. So I expected them to be unique. But honestly, look at every T6 variant of a ship that was already in the game at T5 and there’s a pattern. They are often nearly the same in every aspect. More hull, the addition of a hybrid seat, and a starship trait is usually all the T6 offers over it’s older T5 version. They followed suit with the flagships as well.
My main is a tank and I have a collection of ships that are good for tanking on him. The Yorktown is going to be a decent tank so I will probably pick it up for that reason alone. But I will certainly not be picking up a 3 or 9 pack as I had initially intended. I’d really hoped to see some good starship mastery traits too. Something that would make me rethink the 5 that I currently use.
I also wish the Sojourner skin and Yorktown skins were switched because I LOVE the look of the Sojourner. But at least I like the Yorktown’s look better than the Endeavour’s. Something about the Endeavour’s saucer that feels wrong to me. But of course that’s about what pleases my eye and has no bearing on performance.
February 9, 2016 at 2:36 pm #163878I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to switch costume parts around between any of the three variants and the old Odyssey.
February 10, 2016 at 2:34 am #163879I think it was a good opportunity to add some kind of new mechanic, similar to Intel/Command/Pilot or reintroduce those built in powers here. I secretly hoped that Sci would have Intel built in power, Eng=Com, Tac=Pil. Not sure if that would put them out of balance, giving them advantage over other ships – probably.
Visually, they look great. I like how they made 3 types of Fed saucers available so everyone can be satisfied.

February 10, 2016 at 4:18 am #163880Agreed, they look nice (though I still prefer the original models), but like Jim, I had hoped that they had introduced a new, unique mechanic/skill – these are the tip of the spear, the Flagships of their respective fleets, they are entitled to some exotics, something like the Galaxy Dreadnought.
For example I don’t think the Fed variant can use the Aquarius escort.( Edit; Thomas Marone’s pdf ‘article’ indicates the Fed flagships can use the Aquarius )
I had hoped for a ‘multi-universal’ Boff which would’ve allowed you to choose either pilot/int/cmd. A full Battle Cloak for the KDF one would be nice too. Right now I don’t see that much of a difference (from a players point of view) between these flagships and the previous Command Battleships – in fact I prefer those, just for their superior traits (AHOD).
So far I only like the Tac trait Super Charged Weapons which boosts directed energy weapon damage, critical hit chance and critical severity for a short time when firing a torpedo (crafted enh part torp in my case). So I might get a Tactical variant – eventually.
"Boldly bashing Borg to bits since 2012..."February 10, 2016 at 9:58 am #163881Flagships are nice, but I’m skipping them in favor of T6 Sovereign class. I’ve been waiting on that ship for over a year now and I think I can wait a little longer. Now that the flagships are out, I’m hoping that T6 Sovereign gets released soon and her fleet version as well

Yeah, i’m waiting this as well, but… Are there any indications that might happen in the near future ? 😕
February 11, 2016 at 7:11 am #163883Well since Sovereign is one of the last iconic ship that haven’t underwent T6 retrofit I’m certain they will release her soon (somewhere around summer I presume). The only other two canon ships that haven’t got their T6 variants are Nebula and Nova, and I don’t think they would prioritize those besides Sovereign which is last in the line of Enterprises (if we don’t count alternate universe Connies).
February 11, 2016 at 7:45 am #163884I decided to wait for 20% ship sale discount to buy a mega bundle. That will save me 400 zen over current price as I’m buying it with dilithium. And I’m not in a hurry as I’m playing with Paradox/Krenim Sci Vessel at the moment.
February 11, 2016 at 1:37 pm #163885They look good and hope people love them. It just means more wait on a re-touched Sovereign at T6 😐
