I tried flying escorts when in my first adventures in STO and it did not go well. I could not figure out how to stay alive and it was a miserable, explosion filled experience. So for years I flew cruisers without any desire to try escorts again.
Recently I decided to get the Advantageous positioning trait which should stack nicely with the Intel spec Space Flanking trait.
Advantageous positioning comes in an escort boat – Miradorn Theta Class Heavy Raider. I was dreading having to level this mastery in an escort. But to my great surprise, I am having a blast. I accumulated some nice traits and learned to fly a bit better over the years, and it seems to have made a whole lot of difference. I probably do less DPS in it than in my Vengeance due to suboptimal build, but it’s so much fun to fly this thing!
Anyway, I just wanted to share this so that anyone else “stuck in the rut” can be encouraged something else.
P.S. Sigh…, this also means that now I have to spend money on Cannon stuff in addition to beams.

And congrats on the Miradorn ! That Improved Raider Flanking (+33% dmg) is really nice.
Escorts are fun, and it’s the traits and Reputation unlocks that makes them that – Continuity is a lifesaver for Glass Cannons for one; it’s even better if you can get Invincible.
I’m eyeing the new(ish) T6 Andorian Chimesh escort for my main Andorian Sci toon, she has been flying the bolts off the T5U Khyzon once with great hilarity, and the Chimesh Grav Well trait looks gravy.
The experimental turrets are an added hammer to the escort’s toolbox too.
For me I’ve come to realize there are escorts, and there are escorts. There are the absolutely wet-paper hull Pilot escorts like the Defiant types and the somewhat sturdier Raider types, which are more to my personal liking/playstyle. If you find a matching cannon bird they can be good fun.
"Boldly bashing Borg to bits since 2012..."I really prefer the Andoran Pilot Escorts. The Get out jail ability is very useful.
