Discovery age characters and traditional fed

I convinced my brother to pick the game back up but after not playing since launch his characters have been wiped so he hast to start fresh. He’s considering starting a discovery era  Fed character. How far would he have to take that character before he could play with my traditional Fed character? Thank you in advance for your insight.

Krueger… it appears from doing the tutorial to being able to play together would be about 10 episodes.

Correct, after the tutorial you can team up with him playing episodes (help him level). Most of the other content/TFOs are capped at level 50, though there are a few TFOs which are open to lower ranks, eg Romulan Minefield and Federation fleet alert.
