Hi all! There is a lot of things i dont understand jet so…here we go.
By the way im flying escort and took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up tactical.
(btw between you and me, that admiral quin is a weirdo i dont undertand how i got all the promotions)1. Shield question
What is bleedthrough 10%; and is it better than 5% bleed 5% absorption? I know that it is good to know your opponent and have that damage resistance on the shield, but what about shield cap and shield regen? Do they even regenerate in combat or is it so insignificant that it doesnt matter?
2. Deflector question..
That big dish that shines the path in front of the ship… is a bad thing since all the bugs see it glowing. I have no idea what it does, there is some graviton, positron, ion thingy about it but what it really does is mystery. The only thing i understand from all the “trons” is the shieled something and that sounds like something nice to have. I have a chance to get a jem hadar dish for complete set and i dont know if it is good for escort. Take into consideration that i like the purple color.
3. Greenish borg poo..
Ok so they seem to vent that stuff a lot. What do i do when i get it? My shields go down fast, my crew complains a lot, and i end up poping all the shieldy stuff i have cause i dont know what to do when that happens.
When in fear when in doubt run in circles scream and shout!
4. Next ship in line…
So far i like escorts, pew pew cannons and stuff, now i dont seem to be able to choose between Fleet patrol escort or Fleet defiant but since i dont have a cloaking module then its a bit of hmm.
Also are fleet modules “lost” after buying fleet ship or can you use them to buy more than one?
5. BOFFS
These guys work so hard, and they need a break now and then, but when i try to add new officer to my rooster says i cant have any more (atm I have 6 of them) do i need to buy more slots or?
7. Forum question
Why is everything so dark here, do i need to change skin or something. I have been looking for way to make things brighter but with no success.March 5, 2013 at 10:16 am #157914ShaneFleet MemberFrom my own understanding (And I won’t pretend I understand game mechanics 100%)…
1. Your shields absorb incoming physical and energy weapons damage. No shield can block all the incoming damage; MOST shields have a 10% bleedthrough of damage, so 10% of all damage you take will pass through and hit your hull while your shields are up. Resilient Shields are an exception, in that only 5% of the damage bleeds through, and another 5% is nullified. In general, higher capacity is better than higher regen due to BOFF shield regen abilities. Shields DO regenerate in combat, but more often than not it’s so small it will not help you if a cube or somesuch decides it doesn’t like you. Blackout gave a good lecture on shield types in the Fleet Tactics subforum (Search for ‘Damaged Focus Game Mechanics’, it’s in there somewhere).
2. Deflector dishes are, I believe, basically an opportunity to add extra modifiers on captain skills to boost starship performance, like hull integrity or some sci-based skills. You’ll have to know exactly what you want your ship to do/be to be able to pick an appropriate deflector. But most of the time, these bonuses are ignored in favour of Set Item Bonuses, like MACO/Omega/Honour Guard/Borg/etc. Check the STO wiki for more info on these sets.
3. You probably mean Plasma Fires. All plasma fires of any type (I think) can be cleared by Hazard Emitters, a musthave science skill. Plasma fires arise from plasma torpedoes and plasma-energy type weapons.
Also, the Borg have 2 skills which they use to drain your shields: A green torpedo that, when it hits your ship it begins radiating a green circle and slowly decreases all your shield facings. OR, Tachyon Beam, which the Borg will fire a blue beam at you, and your shields will get a red outline while the tachyon beam is in effect.
The first shield-draining torp can be cleared by Hazard Emitters (again another reason why it’s so good), though the Borg usually spam it a lot so you’ll end up getting hit by it again before it goes off CD. The second tachyon beam, you’ll have to find a way to increase your Captain’s Flow Capacitor’s skill to decrease its effect. You can’t remove it no matter what however.4. I fly cruisers, so I can’t answer you about escorts but yes, Fleet Modules disappear after you use them. (Otherwise their price on the exchange will be dirt cheap, and Cryptic will have no incentive for charging us 500 Zen per piece).
5. Yes, you will get to a maximum number of BOFFs by the time you reach Rear Admiral Lower Half. To get more, check the ‘Services’ menu in the Z-store. 2 additional BOFF slots cost 250 Z per Character. This does NOT apply to every character on your account.
6. (Where’s number 6? 😛 )
7. Dunno; I’m fine with black. 😀

Do they even regenerate in combat or is it so insignificant that it doesnt matter?Bleedthrough 10% means that if a shot that would deal 100 damage hits your shields, they take 100 damage, and 10% (or 10 damage) also gets applied to your hull.
Bleedthrough 5%, 5% absorption means that that same 100 damage shot deals 5 damage to your hull (bleedthrough), and 100-5=95 damage to your shields.
As you can see, the resiliant shields (5/5) are better.
Also, shields do regenerate in combat, and if you shield power is high enough, it -definately- makes a difference in combat.

Generally, deflectors add bonuses to your skills. Each one does something different. The Jem deflector is okay, but is outclassed by the Omega Reputation gear.

Both are quality ships. I prefer the Defiant’s console layout, but the Patrol’s Boff stations. The Patrol is probably the better overall ship.

March 6, 2013 at 11:19 am #157916bodgeupFleet MemberI have always been an escort tactical captain and have enjoyed ever min, for me trying to achieve a build that gives the highes DPS output is what i like to do.
The borg space stuff used to be the gold standard then they nerfed the set from 4 piece to 3 piece, but if you run Borg def & eng with Maco shields u should be good for anything.
Its just a matter of finding the techniques that suit you and improving on them, but Tac officers are def all about combat.
